XLR Microphones
The connector on the rear of XLR microphones is a male and the pins are 1 - Ground, 2 - Audio, and 3 - Audio. Microphone audio will always appear between pins 2 and 3.
1. Connect XLR Pin 2 to the Tip of a 3.5mm TRS plug.
2. Connect XLR pin 1 and 3 together and then to Sleeve of the 3.5mm TRS plug.
Your
microphone may have a coaxial style audio cable. In that case, the
center conductor will carry the audio to the Tip of 3.5mm TRS plug and
the shield should be connected to Sleeve of the 3.5mm TRS plug.
The other connection to the HL2+ microphone connector is the PTT signal, which is grounded to place the HL2+ into transmit. A PTT switch can be connected between Sleeve and Ring of the 3.5mm TRS plug.
With the HL2+, Microphone audio and PTT share the same ground connection.
3.5mm Plug Microphones
Some 3.5mm plug microphones are only Tip and Sleeve only (no Ring). This will cause the HL2+ to be put into continuous transmit if plugged into the HL2+ MIC jack. In this case, an adapter from TRS plug to two TS jacks must be provided, either built or bought.
If you are not comfortable making your own cables, there are ready made adapter cables available, in this case an adapter which breaks out HL2+ TRS MIC jack microphone audio and PTT connections into separate RCA jacks (XLR microphones), or separate 3.5mm TS jacks (3.5mm microphones):
